Reading with your child

Reading with and to your child is the most significant thing you can do to enable them to learn.

Being able to read and comprehend is vital to learning throughout the curriculum and in life.

Ideally, please read with your child for 10 to 15 minutes each day. The time of day depends on what works best for you and your child.

Reading Decodable books - please see the tab for Phonics and Rhino Readers on how to read these books with your child.                                                               (Your child needs to use their phonic knowledge to decode the words, blending the sounds together and use their tricky word knowledge.)

Reading Banded Books -please see the Parents- Reading with your child document (link  below) on how to read these books with your child.                                      (For further guidance and background information please watch the video and see the PowerPoint - links below).                                                        When reading the banded books always do a picture/vocabulary talk before reading.

Ask your child to retell, predict and question them about the story.

Learn their tricky words (where appropriate).

Please record when your child has read to you in their reading record book.

Remember keep reading an enjoyable experience!

Bedtime story - reading to your child helps to develops a love of reading.

We aim to create fluent, confident readers who appreciate and love reading. With your support hopefully we can achieve this.

Reading underpins so much of our future learning, but reading for enjoyment is a gift we carry with us for life.

Please see below  letters, quotes, recommended books, links and guidelines for supporting your child with their reading at home.
