Modern Foreign Languages
Intent - Train up a child....
Learning a foreign language is a necessary part of being a member of a multi-cultural society and provides an opening to other cultures. At Frant primary school, we recognise that modern foreign languages play a vital part in ensuring that children have a greater knowledge and understanding of the world. It is our intention that by the end of Key Stage Two, all children will have developed a genuine interest and positive curiosity about foreign languages finding them enjoyable and stimulating.
At Frant primary school, the teaching of modern foreign languages has been carefully considered to enable our pupils to becoming budding linguists. We strive to enable children to become passionate, curious and confident about their ability to learn another language by the time they finish their primary educations. We want children to be able to communicate with others around the world, helping to break down barriers and ensure children develop a love for languages.
- Children will develop their language and communication through development of the four key skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing.
- Children will enrich their language learning by developing an understanding of the French culture.
Implementation
- French is taught from YR to Y6 by a specialist teacher
- Opportunites for children to access French outside of dedicated lessons, for example, when taking the register, playing counting games in Maths, greetings at the start and end of the day, learning songs and listening to stories
- Well-planned lessons to support and yet enrich the differing needs of the learners
- A progression of skills threaded throughout the school, so that pupils build upon their prior learning
- Fun lessons involving a variety of tecnhiques to encourage children to have an active engagement with French
- A languages day to teach children about other cultures around the world
Impact
You can measure the impact by...
- Talking to the children! They will share with you enthusiasm towards the subject and will be keen to demontstrate their skills!
- Viewing the school environment! Look at our displays which show topics we are learning about.
- Talking to the parents! Ask them how their children are progressing with their knowlege of the French language and culture, as well as how enthusiastic the children are about their language learning.
